Chapter Fourteen

MAY

May heard the roar of the crowd as the human circled her, that smug look on his face. Oddly enough, what angered her wasn’t the fact that Logan had given her to Kristoff to use or that the bear shifter had thrown her into this pit to become a victim of some crazed human. It was that she’d let Hunter down. Even now, she could hear him screaming at her, though his words were lost among the deafening roar of the shifters on the hill, watching, thirsting for violence.

She wanted to turn her head toward Hunter, to gain strength from the way he always looked at her, as if she mattered above all else. Taking her eyes off the human, however, would mean a fast death.

Her opponent grabbed his cock. No, not a fast death, not until he used her, humiliated her first.

She needed her wolf, the wolf who was too terrified to show. Like a turtle pulling its head into its shell, her wolf had retreated at the first whiff of the human’s scent. Except May was the shell, and she wouldn’t survive against this human without her wolf.

A flash of white caught May’s eye. She glanced to the right. A mistake. The human charged her, slammed her to the ground and knocked the wind out of her. As she struggled to breathe, the human grabbed her hands and pinned them above her head. His cock, already hard, struck her inner thigh as he used his massive legs to push her legs apart.

Then she heard the howl ripping through the thunderous roar of the spectators. The deeply pained howl of a mate calling pack, a mate desperate to protect what belonged to him. No, that howl was much more personal. . . A call to her wolf inside. Hunter’s wolf was calling to her wolf, stirring her, giving her the strength she needed to free herself from the mental shackles forged so many years ago.

Even as the human’s scent filled May’s nostrils, Hunter’s wolf guided her wolf through the haze of terror.

“What the fuck?” the human said as May shifted into a wolf. Hazel eyes grew wide as the human snapped to his feet, but it was too late. May’s wolf leapt at him and sank her teeth into the man’s throat.

He batted at her ribs, punched her snout, but still, she held on. Even as he dropped and rolled on the ground, she clamped her jaws down, refusing to release him.

The coppery taste of blood coated her tongue as blood poured into her mouth. Another howl. Encouragement, excitement, strength all rolled into one, pushed her to keep holding even as her jaw muscles weakened from the strain. The man dug his fingers into her face, aiming for her eyes, she flailed, driving her teeth in farther, tearing the flesh as far as she could without losing her grip.

Then he struggled no more, his body falling limp atop her. His eyes remained open but did not focus or move.
